From Classical Mongolian ᠰᠠᠶᠢᠳ (sayid), from Middle Mongol ᠰᠠᠶᠢᠳ (sayid), perhaps ultimately from Arabic سَيِّد (sayyid, “master, mister, sir”). Cognate with Buryat һайд (hajd), Kalmyk сәәд (sääd), etc.
