Borrowed from Persian ایران (irân), from Middle Persian 𐭠𐭩𐭥𐭠𐭭 (ʾyr ʾn /Ērān/). Replaced فارس (fârs, “Persia”) during the 20th century, a request of Reza Shah Pahlavi to the international community. Compare Pashto ایران (erān), Punjabi ایران (ayrān), Uyghur ئىران (iran), Kazakh Иран (İran), Chinese 伊朗 (yīlǎng), all borrowings from Persian.
