غان
Persian
Alternative forms
- قان (qân)
Etymology
The Turkic *kiān (“blood”) as in Kazakh қандыағаш (qandyağaş, “alder”). Analogously, for cornel, *kïŕïl (“red”) also sufficed alone for a dendronym in East Slavic, Russian кизи́л (kizíl), Ukrainian кизи́л (kyzýl), Belarusian кізі́л (kizíl), in spite of Turkic languages themselves only using derivations from the adjective therefor. Compare the other name of betulaceous plants هوش (huš) in Persian corresponding to Mongolian хус (xus, “birch”).
