A contraction of ܐܢ‎ (ʾen, “if”) +‎ ܠܐ‎ (lā, “not”); cognate with Hebrew אֶלָּא‎ (ʾellâ), Arabic إِلَّا‎ (ʔillā), Ge'ez አላ (ʾälla).
