Elliptical form of ܐܪܥܐ ܝܒܝܫܬܐ (ʾarʿāʾ yabbīštāʾ), from ܐܪܥܐ (ʾarʿāʾ, “land”) + ܝܒܝܫܬܐ (yabbīštāʾ, “dry”), from the root ܝ-ܒ-ܫ (y-b-š) related to dryness. Compare Hebrew יַבָּשָׁה (yabbāšâ).
