From Sanskrit उन्दुर (undura), उन्दुरु (unduru), उन्दरु (undaru), etc. from a lost Vedic substrate language[1] (compare Old Khmer kuntūra whence Khmer កណ្ដុរ (kɑndol)). Compare Bengali ইঁদুর (ĩdur), Assamese এন্দুৰ (endur), Sylheti ꠃꠘ꠆ꠖꠥꠞ (undur), Gujarati ઉંદર (undar), Marathi उंदीर (undīr), Konkani उंदिर.
