From Sanskrit उन्दुर (undura), उन्दुरु (unduru), उन्दरु (undaru), etc. from a lost Vedic substrate language.[1] Cognate with Assamese এন্দুৰ (endur), Sylheti ꠃꠘ꠆ꠖꠥꠞ (undur), Hindi इंदुर (indur), Gujarati ઉંદર (undar), Marathi उंदीर (undīr), Konkani उंदिर (undir).
