Inherited from Maharastri Prakrit 𑀉𑀝𑁆𑀝 (uṭṭa), from Sanskrit उष्ट्र (úṣṭra), from Proto-Indo-Aryan *úṣṭras, from Proto-Indo-Iranian *úštras. Cognate with Konkani ओंटे (oṇṭê), Gujarati ઊંટ (ū̃ṭa), Hindi ऊँट (ū̃ṭ).
