Etymology
From Proto-Indo-Iranian *Háynas, from Proto-Indo-European *(H)óynos. In Indo-Iranian, *Háynas in the sense "one" was replaced by *Háywas and *Háykas, and the usage of *Háynas became restricted to a demonstrative pronoun meaning "that". In Sanskrit, this pronoun is only found enclitically and in some oblique cases and numbers. In Vedic, the genitive and locative dual were एनोस् (enos).
Cognate with Old Latin oinos (Latin ūnus), Oscan 𐌖𐌉𐌍𐌖𐌔 (uinus), Umbrian 𐌖𐌍𐌔 (uns), Russian оди́н (odín), Old Irish óen (whence Irish aon), Belarusian адзі́н (adzín), Bulgarian еди́н (edín), Serbo-Croatian јѐдан, jèdan, Slovene édən, Polish jeden, Czech jeden, Ukrainian оди́н (odýn), Rusyn єде́н (jedén), Slovincian jȧ̃děn, Lithuanian vienas, Old Prussian ains, Latvian viêns, Dutch een, Ancient Greek οἴνη (oínē), Old Church Slavonic ѥдинъ (jedinŭ), German ein, Old Norse einn (whence Danish en, Swedish en, Icelandic einn), Gothic 𐌰𐌹𐌽𐍃 (ains), Old English ān (whence English one, an).
