Inherited from Old Marathi गळा (gaḷā), from Maharastri Prakrit 𑀕𑀮 (gala) + Middle Indo-Aryan -𑀓- (-ka-), from Sanskrit गल (gala). Cognate to Konkani गळो (gaḷô), Hindi गला (galā).
