Inherited from Sauraseni Prakrit *𑀢𑀸𑀡𑁂𑀤𑀺 (*tāṇedi), from Sanskrit तानयति (tānáyati, to extend), from Proto-Indo-Iranian *tānáyati, from Proto-Indo-European *tonéyeti. Cognate with Gujarati તાણવું (tāṇvũ), Marathi ताणणे (tāṇṇe), Sindhi تاڻَڻُ / ताणणु. Also cognate with German dehnen and Old English þennan.
