Inherited from Ashokan Prakrit *𑀧𑀓𑁆𑀓𑀟𑁆- (*pakkaḍ-). Cognate to Gujarati પકડવું (pakaḍvũ), Marathi पकडणे (pakaḍṇe).

Further etymology is uncertain, but it may derive from Sanskrit प्रकृष्टयति (prakṛṣṭayati, to catch) or प्रगृह्णाति (pragṛhṇāti, to hold).
