Inherited from Sauraseni Prakrit 𑀫𑀡 (maṇa), from Sanskrit मनस् (mánas), from Proto-Indo-European *ménos (“mind”), from *men- (“to think”) (compare Avestan 𐬨𐬀𐬥𐬋 (manō), Latin mens, Ancient Greek μένος (ménos) and English mind). Cognate with Bengali মন (mon), Assamese মন (mon), Gujarati મન (man), Malayalam മാനസം (mānasaṃ), Marathi मन (man), Telugu మనసు (manasu) and Punjabi ਮਨ (man).
