Etymology
Unknown; according to Calvert Watkins, Proto-Hellenic *awéidō (Ancient Greek ἀείδω (aeídō)) may be cognate, from a Proto-Indo-European root *h₂wed- or *h₂weyd-. Julius Pokorny has *au̯ed- (“to speak”), IEW, p.76. Alternatively, related to Ancient Greek αὐδή (audḗ). See also Proto-Slavic *vaditi, Lithuanian vadìnti.
