वेत्ति

From Proto-Indo-Aryan *wáytti, from Proto-Indo-Iranian *wáytˢti, from Proto-Indo-European *weyd- (“to know; see”). Cognate with Latin videō, Ancient Greek εἴδω (eídō), Old English witan (whence English wit), Old Church Slavonic вѣдѣти (věděti).

वेत्ति • (vétti) (root विद्, class 2, type P)

1. (with accusative, in older language also with genitive) to know, understand, perceive, learn, become or be acquainted with, be conscious of, have a correct notion of (RV. etc.)

   (with infinitive) — to know how to

   विद्धि यथा ― viddhi yathā ― know that

   विद्यात् ― vidyāt ― one should know / it should be understood

   य एवं वेद ― ya evaṃ veda ― who knows thus / who has this knowledge (Br.)

2. (usually in third-person plural, or with accusative and nominative with इति (iti)) to know, regard, consider as, take for, declare to be, call (Up., Mn., MBh. etc.)

   तं स्थविरं विदुः ― taṃ sthaviraṃ viduḥ ― they consider or call him aged

   राजर्षिरिति मां विदुः ― rājarṣir iti māṃ viduḥ ― they consider me a rājarṣi

3. (with genitive or accusative) to mind, notice, observe, remember (RV., ŚBr., MBh.)
4. (with accusative or genitive) to experience, feel (RV. etc.)
5. (with accusative) to wish to know, inquire about (RV., AV., Br.)
6. (in causative) to make known, announce, report, tell (ŚBr. etc.)

   → causative वेदयते (vedáyate), rarely वेदयति (vedáyati), aorist अवीविदत् (avīvidat), passive वेद्यते (vedyate)

7. to teach, explain (ŚāṅkhŚr.)
8. (with two accusatives) to recognize or regard as, take for (MBh., Kāv.)
9. to feel, experience (ŚBr., Mn.)
10. (in desiderative, with accusative) to wish to know or learn, inquire about (ŚBr. etc.)

    → desiderative of causative विवेदयिषु (vivedayiṣu), desiderative विविदिषति (vividiṣati) or विवित्सति (vivitsati), intensive वेविद्यते (vevidyate), वेवेत्ति (vevetti)
