Learned borrowing from Sanskrit पथ (patha), from Proto-Indo-Aryan *patʰás, from Proto-Indo-Iranian *patʰás, ultimately from Proto-Indo-European *pent- (“path”); Cognate with Assamese পথ (poth), Gujarati પથ (path), Hindi पथ (path), Konkani पथ (path), Marathi पथ (path), Oriya ପଥ (pôthô), Punjabi ਪਥ (path). Doublet of পন্থা (pontha, “path, way, manner”).
