Probably borrowed from a Turkic language (compare Kazakh мешіт (meşit), Karakalpak meshit, Uzbek machit). Ultimately from Arabic مَسْجِد‎ (masjid). Compare also Indic cognates Old Hindi मसीति (masīti), Old Marathi 𑘦𑘭𑘲𑘝𑘲 (masītī), likely from the same source.
