Probably borrowed from a Turkic language (compare Kazakh мешіт (meşit), Karakalpak meshit, Uzbek machit). Ultimately from Arabic مَسْجِد (masjid). Compare also Indic cognates Old Hindi मसीति (masīti), Old Marathi 𑘦𑘭𑘲𑘝𑘲 (masītī), likely from the same source.
