ஈழம்

Tamil

Etymology

Inherited from Old Tamil *𑀈𑀵𑀫𑁆 (*īḻam), either from Proto-Dravidian *īẓam (toddy, Sri Lanka) or borrowed from Prakrit 𑀲𑀻𑀳𑀮 (sīhala) (from Sanskrit सिंहल (siṃhala)); in this case, words for "toddy" in other Dravidian languages, such as Kannada ಈಡಿ (īḍi), would be borrowings from Old Tamil.[1]
