เมา

From Proto-Tai *mawᴬ (“drunk”). Cognate with Northern Thai ᨾᩮᩢᩣ, Lao ເມົາ (mao), Lü ᦙᧁ (maw), Shan မဝ်း (máo), Tai Nüa ᥛᥝᥰ (mäw), Tai Dam ꪹꪣꪱ.

เมา • (mao) (abstract noun การเมา or ความเมา)

1. to be intoxicated, as with alcohol, drug, etc.
   • เมาเหล้า

     mao lâo

     to be drunk.
     (literally) to be intoxicated with liquor.

   • เมากัญชา

     mao gan-chaa

     to be intoxicated with cannabis.

2. to nauseate: to have a queasy and dizzy sensation.
   • เมาหมัด

     mao màt

     to be punch drunk.

   • เมารถ

     mao rót

     to be carsick.
     (literally) to be nauseated by a wheeled vehicle.

   • เมาเรือ

     mao rʉʉa

     to be seasick.
     (literally) to be nauseated by a vessel.

3. (figurative) to lose conscience because of absorption in, addiction to, or infatuation with someone or something, as power, authority, wealth, praise, honour, etc.
