Etymology

From an anti-cheating strategy in the Imperial Examination in ancient China, where candidates were required to hold a card written with the word 出恭入敬 (“leaving and entering [the examination site] respectcfully”) when going to toilet during the examination, and were also required to return the card when they were back (see , , and 恭敬 for detailed meaning of each character).
