Etymology
Compound of 意気 (iki, “disposition; spirit, courage, confidence”) + 込み (komi, “going in; being full of”, the 連用形 (ren'yōkei) of the verb 込む (komu, “to go in; to be full of”)).[1][2] The komi changes to gomi as an instance of rendaku (連濁).
First cited to a text from 1656.[1]
