From 눈 (nun, “eye”) + —에 (e, locative marker) + —ㅅ— (-s-, genitive marker) + 가시 (gasi, “thorn”), literally: "a thorn in the eye". Compare a similar expression in Chinese 眼中釘，肉中刺／眼中钉，肉中刺 (yǎnzhōngdīng, ròuzhōngcì, “a nail in the eye, a thorn in the flesh”).
