From 허벅 (heobeok, “a round and bulging shape”) + 디(지) (脚, di(ji), “leg”). -디 (di) later changed to -지 (ji) due to 구개음화 현상 (口蓋音化, gugaeeumhwa hyeonsang, “palatalization”).
