From Proto-Turkic *yagï (“enemy, war”). Cognate with Karakhanid يَغٖى‎ (yaɣï̄, “enemy”), Kazakh жау (jau, “enemy”), Khakas чаа (çaa, “war”), Ottoman Turkish یاغی‎ (yağı, “stranger, enemy”).
