Inherited from Ottoman Turkish بورغاز (Burğaz), probably a transliteration of an earlier Πύργος (Pýrgos, watchtower) as per accounts by Byzantine author Manuel Philes. Ultimately of paleo-Balkan or paleo-Anatolian origin.
