Etymology
From Persian هندوکش (hendukoš, hendukoš). The origin and meaning of the name are uncertain. According to Ibn Battuta and popular etymology, it is interpreted as a compound of هندو (hendu) + کش (koš-), which would mean "Hindu-slayer". Some interpret it to be a corruption of هندو (hendu) + کوه (koh-), which would mean “Mountains of the Indus / of India”, related to the term Hindkowan used to describe people living near the region who speak Hindko.
Attested in English from the 18th century.
