From Ukrainian Ки́їв (Kýjiv), purportedly from the name of a legendary founder, Кий (Kyj). Compare Russian Ки́ев (Kíjev), which in turn is from Кий (Kij). See Kyi, Shchek and Khoryv in Wikipedia.
