• In the 20th century, the city was almost universally known as Kiev. Style guides updated since 2005 recommend using the spelling Kyiv, which is the Ukrainian government's official Roman-alphabet name for the city according to the national standard for romanization of Ukrainian Київ (Kyjiv). The spelling Kyiv has been adopted by geographic naming databases, international organizations, major newspapers, dictionaries, and many other reference sources. • Due to the former colonial imposition of Russian language on Ukraine before its independence in 1991, the choice of spelling may be interpreted as having political overtones. The Ukrainian-derived spelling Kyiv is the overall most neutral English spelling; however, it may be viewed as supportive or sympathetic towards Ukraine's self-determination. The Russian-derived spelling Kiev may be viewed as supportive or sympathetic towards Russia's imperial views of Ukraine. These issues have come to the fore during the Russo-Ukrainian War which began in 2014.
