Alternative forms
- Pinökel, Pinöppel, Pinöckel
Etymology
Probably from regional Pinne f (“pin, peg, lever”), from Middle Low German pin, pinne, from Old Saxon pin, from Proto-Germanic *pinnaz. Cognate with English pin (whence German Pin m). The second part of the word is perhaps only a fanciful extension or it may go back to some other dialectal word; if the form Pinökel is original, possibly a cognate of Haken (“hook”), häkeln (“to hook; to crochet”).
Pronunciation
- IPA(key): /piˈnøːpəl/
Noun
Pinöpel m (genitive Pinöpels, plural Pinöpel, diminutive Pinöpelchen n)
- (colloquial, regional, northern and central Germany) a protrusion or stud of any kind, but especially one designed for some function (in devices, fasteners, packaging, etc.)
