From Proto-Indo-European *bʰr̥ǵʰeh₂, zero-grade form of *bʰerǵʰ- (high). Cognate with Proto-Italic *forktis (strong, robust)[1] (compare Latin fortis), Proto-Indo-Iranian *bʰrȷ́ʰánts (high, tall, mighty), Old Armenian բարձր (barjr, high, great). Related to Proto-Celtic *brixs (hill).
