Proto-Finnic
Etymology
From earlier *šauki. Has been considered a borrowing from early Proto-Slavic *ščaukā (from which late Proto-Slavic *ščuka),[1] but now this is considered untenable for phonetic reasons, and the Finnic and Slavic words might instead have a common substrate origin.[2]
Inflection
The descendants disagree on the inflection. Estonian, Votic, Livvi, Ludian and partly Veps have an i-stem paradigm, the remaining ones an e-stem.
