From Pre-Germanic *h₂elk-éh₂-ti, a metathesized form of Proto-Indo-European *h₂lek- (to defend). Cognate with Ancient Greek ἀλέξω (aléxō, defend), Old Armenian երաշխիք (erašxikʿ, guarantee, pledge), Sanskrit रक्षति (rákṣati, guard, watch, take care).
