From Proto-Balto-Slavic *(s)kersas, from Proto-Indo-European *(s)kert-. Cognate with Latvian šķērss (“transverse, cross”), Lithuanian sker̃sas (“transverse, cross”), Old Prussian kērscha, kirscha (“transverse, cross”).
