Action/result noun from Proto-Slavic *žьgati (to burn, to brand) via enlongation of the root vowel, ultimately from Proto-Indo-European *dʰigʷʰ-ó-s (burning, dwindling). Akin to Proto-Celtic *degʷis (flame, blaze), Lithuanian dēgis (heater).
