Etymology

From Proto-Balto-Slavic *pentà. Probably from *pęti (to stretch) + *-ta, from Proto-Indo-European *(s)penh₁- (to span, to spin). Akin to Lithuanian péntis (heel, spur), Old Prussian pentis (spur), Latvian piête (i-stems).
