Etymology

From Proto-Balto-Slavic *śḗˀweras/*śjáuras. Derksen reconstructs its Proto-Indo-European antecedent as *ḱeh₁wer-o-s, Dybo as *(s)ḱyeh₂w- ~ *(s)ḱih₂w- (north; north wind). Cognate with Lithuanian šiaurỹs (north wind), šiáurė (north), šiū́ra (dialectal).
