Old Polish
Etymology
Inherited from Proto-Slavic *sěverъ, likely under the influence of the Czech cognate. The expected form *siewiór is not attested outside of onomastics. Cognates include Upper Sorbian sowjer, Czech sever, Slovak sever, Russian север (sever), Slovene sever. Displaced by Polish północ, originally meaning "midnight".
