Proto-Slavic

Etymology

From Proto-Indo-European *ḱléw-(e)-ti, from Proto-Indo-European *ḱlew- (to listen to); technically equivalent to Proto-Indo-European *ḱel- (to incline towards) + *-uti. The root vowel was retracted to -o- in Slavic due to the the following -w- (as in *novъ from Pre-Slavic *néwos). Cognate with Latvian sluvêt (to become famous), Ancient Greek κλέω (kléō, to glorify), Latin clueō (to be called).
