gërmoj

Albanian

Etymology

Uncertain. Either:

  1. a variant of gërmih,
  2. a denominative verb derived from gërmë (letter) in its otherwise unattested meaning 'line, scratch'; it would have originally meant 'to scratch lines', and thus from Ancient Greek γράμμα (grámma).[1]

Verb

gërmoj (first-person singular past tense gërmova, participle gërmuar)

  1. to hoe, dig
