Etymology

Probably from Proto-Slavic *ǫsěnica. The initial g- is prothetic or by conflation with Common Slavonic гоущерица (gušterica, “lizard”). Cognate with Slovak húsenica, Old Church Slavonic юсеница (jusenica), and Russian гусеница (gusenica).
