iżża

Maltese

Etymology

Root
'-ż-j

From Arabic جَزَى (jazā, to requite). The imperfect tense shows assimilation *niġżiniżżi. The rare perfect is a backformation from the imperfect on the model of such a verb as idda, from Arabic أَدَّى (ʾaddā).

Pronunciation

  • IPA(key): /ˈɪz.za/

Verb

iżża (imperfect jiżżi)

  1. (only with ħajr) to give (thanks); to thank
    Synonym: rringrazzja
    Niżżukom ħajr għall-ħidma tagħkom!
We thank you for your work!
(literally, “We give you thanks for your work!”)

Conjugation

  • The perfect tense is often avoided. It can be replaced by kien + imperfect.
