Etymologically matches the phrase qua đò (“to cross a river on a boat”). Also homophonous with cognates of quá độ above in other languages, such as Mandarin guòdù, Cantonese gwo3 dou6, Korean 과도 (gwado), etc., except in Japanese. See also quá giang.
