Etymology

Possibly a derivative of shuj (to be silent, to hush), thus originally meaning to 'bring to silence, to suppress', cognate to Ancient Greek σβέννυμι (sbénnumi, to quench). Alternatively from Latin subjugāre, with loss of the two intervocalic voiced stops.[1]
