From Old Catalan trebaylar, from Vulgar Latin *tripaliāre, apparently a verb based on Late Latin trepalium (torture instrument), a noun derived from Latin tripālis (composed of three stakes). Compare Occitan trabalhar, Spanish trabajar, French travailler.
