Albanian
Pronunciation
- IPA(key): [tym]
Etymology 1
From Proto-Albanian *ātuma, related to Proto-Germanic *ēþmaz (“breath”) and Sanskrit आत्मन् (ātmán, “blow, breath, soul”), where the inlaut -y- may be secondary[1]; from Proto-Indo-European *dʰuh₂mós (“smoke”). Compare Old High German toum (“vapor, haze, mist”), Ancient Greek θῡμός (thūmós, “breath, life, soul, heart, spirit, courage, mind, temper, will, anger, wrath”), Latin fumus (“smoke, steam, vapor”). De Vaan supports a Loanword from Ancient Greek θῡμός (thūmós).
