Etymology

From Proto-Albanian *ōtr- Ultimately derived from *h₂ehₓ-tr-eh₂< Proto-Indo-European *h₂eh₁ter- (“fire”). Cognate to Latin āter (“black”) and Proto-Iranian *ātr-. The Slavic and Balkan Romance terms (Romanian: vatrã) were probably borrowed from Albanian, due to the Ō to V transformation observed exlusively in Albanian, see varfër, vesh, verbër and vadhë[1][2]
