From Proto-Albanian *ōtr- Ultimately derived from *h₂ehₓ-tr-eh₂< Proto-Indo-European *h₂eh₁ter- (fire). Cognate to Latin āter (black) and Proto-Iranian *ātr-. The Slavic and Romance words were probably borrowed from Albanian, due to the Ō to V transformation observed exlusively in Albanian, see varfër, vesh, verbër and vadhë[1][2]
