Inherited from Proto-Slavic *vermę, from Proto-Balto-Slavic *wertmen or *wertmin, from Proto-Indo-European *wértmn̥, from the root *wert- (“to turn”). Displaced by czas.

Cognate with Sanskrit वर्त्मन् (vartman, “track, course”).
