From Albanian Tirana, definite nominative form of Tiranë, from older Terrana (in Latin sources), from Proto-Albanian *Tūrsanā, possibly Ancient Greek Τυρσηνοί (Tursēnoí), Τυρσανοί (Tursanoí), an epithet used to denote the inhabitants of the Tyrrhenian Sea (cf. Latin Mare Tyrrhēnum).
