auswaschen

Equivalent to aus (“out”) +‎ waschen (“to wash”).

auswaschen (strong, third-person singular simple present wäscht aus, past tense wusch aus, past participle ausgewaschen, auxiliary haben)

1. (transitive) to wash out (a container, a brush, etc.)

   Wir müssen die Mülleimer auswaschen; die sind voller Maden.

   We must wash out the bins; they are full of maggots.

2. (transitive) to wash out (a stain, etc.); to remove by washing

   Den Fleck kann ich auswaschen.

   I can wash out that stain.

3. (reflexive) to be washed out; to fade through washing (chiefly of dyes)

   Dein neues Hemd ist schlechte Qualität; die Farbe wäscht sich schon aus.

   Your new shirt is of bad quality; the colour is already fading in the wash.

• The reflexive use generally implies gradual fading. For “to wash out” said of a stain, use sich auswaschen lassen: Der Fleck hat sich gut auswaschen lassen. (“That stain washed out well.”) Colloquially, rausgehen is also used: Der Fleck ist gut rausgegangen.
